Trademark registration in the Dominican Republic

Trademark registration in the Dominican Republic is governed by Law 20-00 on Industrial Property and its Implementing Regulations.

Process for registering a trademark in the Dominican Republic with ONAPI (National Office of Industrial Property):

  1. We recommend completing a feasibility report for the trademark to be applied for in the classes and/or categories of interest.
  2. If the application meets the legal requirements, the National Office of Intellectual Property (ONAPI) will allow the applicant to pay for the publication of an excerpt of the application in its bulletin.
  3. Interested third parties will have 45 days from the date of publication in the bulletin to file an opposition to the application.
  4. If the application is not opposed within this period, or if the objection filed is rejected, ONAPI will issue the applicant a trademark registration certificate valid for ten years, which may be renewed upon expiration.
  5. The entire process, without oppositions or observations, can take an administrative time of 6 to 12 months.
