Requirements for Trademark Registration in Nigeria

Trademark Name

• This can be a word, logo, slogan, combination of letters or words, or any distinctive sign.

Trademark Class(es)

• Nigeria adheres to the Nice Classification system, which includes 45 classes (34 for goods and 11 for services).

Applicant Information

• Full name or company name

• Address

• Nationality (for individuals) or country of incorporation (for companies)

Trademark Representation

• An image or design of the logo (if it's a figurative or combined mark)

Power of Attorney (PoA)

• No legalization or notarization required — only a signed copy is needed.

Registration Process in Nigeria

Preliminary Search (optional, but recommended)

• To check whether a similar or identical mark already exists.

• It can be requested online.

Application Filing

• Submit the application to the Trademarks Registry.

• Usually done through a registered trademark attorney or agent in Nigeria.

Examination (Formal & Substantive)

• To ensure all formal requirements are met and that the mark is distinctive and non-conflicting.

Publication in the Trademarks Journal

• If accepted, the mark is published for opposition (2-month window).
